How To Start

Let's talk about what it means to be vegan, from what you eat, the daily products you buy and use, the impact on animals and the environment, and ways you can actively help animals. Also check out our frequently asked questions for vegans for more useful information.

Transitioning to a vegan plant-based way of eating can seem challenging at first. We will both touch upon this topic in our individual stories in "About Us", but the position of Saucy Revolutionary is that incrementally removing meat and dairy from your diet is best. Changing what you eat a little bit at a time is the best way to achieve success. If you attempt to drop all the foods you eat at once and shift too quickly to being vegan, you will probably fail in the long run. Of course it’s possible to make a fast change, and if that personally works for you then that’s great. But like most things in life, having patience and taking your time is the most likely way to achieve your goal of eating plant based.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good! Doing something, like giving up one animal product for weeks, months, or years to start, is better than nothing. Create a goal of slowing shifting, and we believe you will have more success this way. If you are in a situation where you end up falling back, remember this isn’t about being flawless, it’s about making a change for greater good. If you are hard on yourself because you had an animal product at a holiday, special event, or vacation then you may give up altogether because you “weren't perfect.” This is not a good perspective to have. Doing the best you can and adjusting to eating plant based most of the time is the best attitude to have. Remember, this is not a fad diet, it’s a decision you have made based on your personal principles and wanting to make the world, and your health, better. Reminding yourself of this is helpful as you are evolving into being vegan!

Being Vegan

Being vegan is a moral decision based on one’s personal ethics to not contribute to the unnecessary harming of animals, the planet, and to support optimum health.

It is inaccurate to view veganism as a fad diet, an extreme food choice, or part of an eating disorder. We live in a day and age where breeding animals, raising them in often abusive and unsanitary circumstances, and killing them for food is unnecessary. When it comes to foods, being vegan means not consuming any foods that derive from animals or insects. Therefore no meat, fish, seafood, eggs, milk, cheese, and honey.

Being vegan also means to take a stand against all forms of animal exploitation. This includes: killing animals for clothing and accessories, product testing on animals, forcing animals to perform for entertainment, and a personal commitment to the development and advancement of foods, clothing, and daily supplies that are free from the use and abuse of animals.

Being plant-based means eating foods consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, beans, legumes, and oils. Being vegan and eating plant-based are not necessarily mutually exclusive. You can be vegan to not harm animals and not necessarily be concerned with eating a healthy diet. This is not generally the perspective of Saucy Revolutionary. Nonetheless, even though we will provide healthy food information, we will also give a wide variety of vegan recipes and restaurant establishment suggestions. These may include foods that have been processed or have sugar in them, but are vegan. The primary goal of Saucy Revolutionary is to help and inform those who would like to transition into eating less, or no meat and dairy. Therefore, we are going to give our viewers all the information we can and it is up to you to decide what type of vegan options you would like to choose!

Any person transitioning to vegan plant-based foods should be warned that others in your life may behave strangely when you tell them. You will find that some friends and family will get defensive, or even be oddly argumentative regarding the topic of food. Furthermore, inevitably you can expect to be lectured to by someone with absolutely no formal knowledge of nutrition, about their concern regarding your protein! Contrary to what you will be told by the sudden and sometimes many ‘nutritional experts' in your life, the truth is you can get all of the nutrients necessary for optimum health by eating vegan plant-based foods. Whether you are slowly transitioning, trying a “Meatless Monday”, or beginning by trying to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, our perspective at Saucy Revolutionary is that perfection should not be the enemy of progress. We are not here to judge, but to be supportive and informative.
